how to start using coupons

If you want to learn how to start using coupons to save a LOT of money and even get items completely FREE each month, pull up a chair and read along.

I hope you learn to have as much fun as I do seeing just how much you can save using coupons everywhere you can!  It does make you feel so great to know that you have spent your hard earned money well!

1. Where to find coupons?

Our Coupon Database is loaded with any coupon that is currently available.  It is so easy to use.   If you want to know if there is a coupon available for a particular product, you simply search by name or partial name.  If a coupon is available, you will be told where to find it or you can print it directly from the coupon database.

To start, you will want to build your coupon stash!

  • Sunday Newspapers - The Sunday Paper will have anywhere from 1 to 4 coupon inserts each week;  Smartsource, Redplum, Proctor & Gamble and Unilever.   Coupons can vary by region and you typically see the best coupons if you subscribe to your Sunday paper, which you can usually do relatively inexpensively.  Ask your neighbors or friends for their coupon inserts if they do not use them.
  • Blinkies – These are the little coupon machines you see on store shelves in front of products.  You can use these anytime and at any store, not just at the store or at the time you find it. It’s best to use them during a sale to maximize savings but they are there to entice you to use them when a product is full price. The store gets their full price AND gets reimbursed for the coupon from the manufacturer. Better for them..not for us.
  • Peelies – Coupons taped onto the outside of products on shelves. Again, you can use them anytime and at any store. Not just at the store or at the time you find it.
  • Free Samples – A lot of times when you request a Free Sample of a product you will get a great higher value coupon along with it.
  • Email Companies -  Yes, you can actually email companies and ask them if they would mail you coupons.  They are usually happy to do so.

You will quickly learn to be on the outlook for coupons.  I have also seen them in Magazines and even Doctors and Dentist offices.

2. Get Started Cutting your Grocery BudgetThis post will give you a little more insight how to use these coupons to maximize your savings each week as well as some other strategic ways to save.

3. Coupon Organizing -I have written this post to show you the many ways to organize all these coupons you start accumulate.

4. Coupon Lingo – Read this post to learn all the coupon terms and abbreviations you will see when referencing where to find them

Here are a few Tips as you get started saving with coupons:

  • Don’t be brand specific.  If you are open to trying many different brands, you will save more.
  • A smaller item is sometimes a much better bargain when using a coupon. You can get items for FREE or practically Free sometimes when you buy the smallest size.
  • Try to shop at a store that doubles coupons. For example, shop at your store that doubles ONLY with coupons for those items when they are on sale to get them at their cheapest, rock bottom price. Otherwise, shop at your cheapest store in town.
  • Most importantly…Have FUN!! Don’t get overwhelmed.  Clip and organize your coupons while watching TV.  You will quickly find that you will want to use coupons on everything you buy! It doesn’t stop with the grocery store and/or drug stores either.

AND please feel free to contact me anytime with questions as you start using coupons!

How do you know which stores double coupons?

Reply

Sherri July 13, 2012 at 9:59 am

Most stores have there coupon policy on their websites. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of stores in Florida that double

I don’t think Publix, Winn Dixie or Food Lion do.

If you can’t find it on their websites. I would just ask at their customer service desk.

Hope this helps,

I grew up in KS and my family and in-laws still live in KS. Not sure where you are located, but I know Dillons used to double coupons, but Dillons isn’t everywhere!! Wish I could be more helpful.

Dear Coupon Goddess,

As I sit here in front of my computer with my coupons thrown everywhere wondering in which order I should organize my coupons in my new baseball card holder sheets & new binder I only have one major question.

I saw a woman the other day MAKE money off of wal-mart, she left with $90 cash & an employee told me the week before that the lady left with $1100 cash…yes $1100!!!! How on earth do I learn to make money off of this, please tell me what to do??? I would love to know the secrets!

Okay I lied, one other question…I seem to always have this problem, I will keep a coupon for 4 or 5 weeks and it will expire before there seems to be a huge money saving sale on that item so what gives?? Please explain how I can better use my coupons before they expire, how often are they having that “BIG” sale on those items??? I need to plan better!

Thank you!

I have the same problem. I collect coupons, watch the sales and before the items even go on sale, the coupon is expired. And I have only received free items a couple of times. It is very hard to get the bargins you read about or see on the Extreme couponer. I think it just doesn’t work here. I got lucky a couple of times and have saved 50% at the store, but I also feel like I’m spending more to save more.

My best deals have come from clearance/mark down items that I happened to have a coupon for. And those were just lucky finds.
I feel like I’m doing something wrong.

Hi, I also would like to know how to find out which grocery store doubles coupons and also where is the best place to get baby deals?

I’m not sure if the moderator would prefer to address this, but I’m going to jump in :). I found that individual stores have differing coupon policies. (My example would be Kroger- the coupon policy is different in my town than it is two counties away) From what I have learned, you need to contact your specific store to get the info- and keep an updated copy of that store’s coupon policy with you in case the clerk might not be aware of all the policies.

Thanks Joanna :-) You are exactly right. You would need to check your local stores coupon policy. Most stores have them on their websites to.

And it is always wise to carry a copy with you, in your car, or in your coupon binder if you have one.

I don’t know about in the mid west, but there is a chain grocery store called Harris Teeter that is predominantly on the east coast, which doubles coupons.

Most of the Grocery Stores website give you there coupon rules. There you will find if they double coupons.

I was into couponing a yr or so ago and let my self fall short of keeping up with it. I had a great stockpile and great coupon collection. I am now trying to get back into it full swing. I am looking for some help with getting my coupons collected back and my stock pile back full. Any help is appreciated.

I am new to the coupon game, and when I say new, I mean I don’t ever use them. We are a one income family and my husband is getting ready to start school. I am trying to find ways to save as much money as possible. I know that coupons are the best way to do this. I have NO idea where or how to start! Please help!

I just recently found out that Target, at least the one I go to in KS, will let you double your coupons if one is specifically Target and one is from a manufacturer!

Reply

Sherri July 13, 2012 at 9:57 am

YES! It’s so great! You can use a Target Store coupon and a manufacturer
coupon on one item :-)

They have A LOT of coupons on their website to print. Here’s my link –

You can also do the same at Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS as well!

I’ve seen a few episodes of the show ‘Extreme Couponers’ and I just don’t understand how they get such HUGE quantities of stuff so cheap. Most of the coupons I see have a limit of how many items you can get for that price. Am I just missing something?

The one thing that confuses me the most is when I find a coupon and it says you have to buy more than one item. It makes me feel like I am actually spending more, because it usually isn’t much off.

Help?!

I am super interested into getting into couponing but I still haven’t figured out all the quirks. I read that in order to figure out if my store doubles the coupons (which means using the same coupon on the same item) I will have to contact my store. But im still not sure what exactly that means. And someone posted above about someone getting money back from the store, which sounds awesome and that would mean that you would have to double the coupon right? and another poster asked the question about how do people get multiple items when a coupon says limit three or something, can you use more than one coupon to get more items? please get back to me asap, Im a single mother and a college student, the sooner I can save money THE BETTER!

I am just getting into couponing. My boyfriend and I just bought a house and have a one year old baby and we need ways to save money and I don’t know how or where to get started on couponing I have literally NEVER used a coupon before in my life so I don’t know how it all works or how you know if the coupon is for a certain store or any store. Please help!!

HI Brooke! I would be glad to help you get started :-) Just dive in and remember to have fun doing it. I make it a game and I look at it as getting paid for my time that I invest in clipping a few coupons and planning my shopping trips a little more.

You can use ANY coupon at any store…grocery stores, drugstores(Walgreens, CVS and Rite Aid) plus Walmart, Target, etc. The key to couponing is to use them during a sale to save the most. AND you can also combine them with drugstores rewards programs and store coupons to save EVEN more!

Check you local grocery store online for their coupon policy. If you don’t find it online, you can just ask at the customer service desk.

Coupons in the Sunday newspaper are usually an indication of an upcoming sale too! So with a week or so there is somewhere to use them. Gorcery store sales are cyclical and repeat themselves every 10-12 weeks.

One of the BEST ways to cut your grocery budget is to plan your weekly meals with the stores sales this week AND use coupons! Sale + coupons = Maximum savings!!
You can build you coupon stash fast by printing online coupons http://www.luvabargain.com/printable-coupons/

Let me know if you have ANY questions at all.
